A popular way to get involved
in hillclimbing is to make use of your 'road legal' car
and enroll in a hillclimb school. But before you set off
you should ensure your car is up to the job! First of all
it may be best if you contact the school to check that your
car will be suitable for the event and inform them of ANY
modifications you have made to the car.
Like any form of motorsport,
hillclimbing is demanding on the machine so long before
you set out to do the hillclimb make sure your car is in
good condition (as a general rule capable of passing and
MOT inspection) and its a good idea to have your car fully
serviced before you hammer it.
If you attend a school which
is AHASS registered you may be able to obtain the equilavent
of 2 upgrading signatures toward the MSA Compitation Licence.
Its best if you check this out with the school before hand.
| A very brief checklist |
| Brakes: Check the
brakes are in excellent working order and the pads have
plenty of life left in them. |
| Clutch: The clutch
could also take a hammering so make sure its in good
condition as well. |
| Tyres: they are vital
in hillclimbing so check pressures, tread wear, sidewalls
are stiff and offering support (especially when cornering),
and make sure the tyres are road legal! |
| Suspension: ensure
the suspension is in good order and you do not have
any worn wheel bearings. |
| Exhaust: the cars
exhaust must be 'road legal' and capable of passing
an MOT inspection. |
| Documentation: remember
to bring your vehicle registration documents and your
'full' driving licence to the school |
| Clothing: Wear suitable
clothes (no shorts), a long sleeve shirt, warm clothing
a waterproof jacket. If you are planning to really go
for it perhaps you should pack a change of underpants
as well! |
