Ok, when we bought the CR we thought that it was fairly complete, how wrong we were.

Many people talk about Honda quality and judging by their parts prices I can see that you have to pay for it. Many of the parts are still available from Honda, although apparently many of the difficult to get bits have already been scavenged by people restoring CR250 red rockets. The best quotes we had were for £90 for a carb slide (you can by an entire carb for around the same price from Keihin) and £300 for a new seat!

How much!

	It pays to shop around - we bought throttle (€14.40) and brake(€21.64) cables plus a twistgrip tube (€24.70) from CMS in Holland - cheaper than we could get in the UK, god bless the Euro.
	The bulk of our parts came from Motocross World (tel: 01788 535207) where Vernon in the parts department was extremely helpful and gave us a discount on parts that they had on the shelf - I think he felt sorry for us...the parts we got are listed below:
	A pair of main bearings cost £11.24 each.
	The oil seals for the crank are of vastly different sizes and cost £7.58 and £5.79 respectively.
	We couldn't get a complete gasket set but Motocross World managed to source all bar the left hand clutch cover gasket at the following prices: Cylinder Base £3.88 Cylinder Head £12.14 (copper) Exhaust £5.00 Reed Valve £3.96 Crankcase £10.59 Right Hand Crankcase £5.32
	The fork seals for the CR cost £11.81 each and include a washer - but the dust seal's which fit over the top are unavailable but look like a fairly standard size so we should be able to get some generic ones.
	On every other MX bike we have done we haven't been able to get the chain slider for the swing arm - Honda still stock the part for £23.48
	These are the air valves for the top of the forks, sadly one of the valves on the original bike was leaking air when you compressed the fork and unfortunately we broke the other one when dismantling the forks - a costly mistake at £15.59 each!
	OK, so you can't tell it from the picture but this is the oil filler cap from the crankcase, the original one cracked up when we tried to undo it - £6.28.
	Those inscrutable Japanese - these are the decals for the tank, the right hand one cost £7.05 and the left one cost £7.13 - even though they are essentially the same design! Other items include a clutch cable at £8.60 (50% discount on actual price) and an Air Filter at £14.09. The total cost from Motocross World was £245.92 including postage!
	The cylinder was badly worn and you could tell from the old piston that a lot of gas was blowing past the piston (loads of black carbon deposits on the piston below the rings). We had our cylinder rebored at Dual Sport in Ledbury (01531 632 745). They also did the crank rebuild - the cost was £160 including parts.
	The £160 also included an oversized piston to match the rebore. This is a pro x item which doesn't look quite as good as the wiseco we used in the Suzuki, but lets see how it lasts.
	The rebore and crank rebuild took a while, mainly due to delays in getting the parts. The problem with old bikes is that this will be the first time in 10 years that the suppliers have been asked for the parts which will be buried under a bunch of pink riding jerseys at the back of the warehouse.

Around £550 and counting - yikes!

We also got some used spares from Ellaston Offroad (01889 590186), £50 for a seat and a kickstart (the seat needs covering, but they did at least tell us that)...sad;y it turns out that the splines on the kickstart just aren't up to it and they slip when given a hefty kick..

Scrooge makes a gasket...

OK, so we couldn't get a clutch gasket so we can make one! Ideally you would use an appropriate material from a gasket supplier, but as we are now skint we are left with a cereal packet. Begin by piecing together the old gasket as shown here - do this on the actual clutch cover to ensure it is the right shape..

Then take you card, and put the gasket on top of it - if you can leave the old gasket on the clutch cover, put the card on top and then flip it over (like a jelly mould) to ensure that the gasket holds the right shape. Then simple spray some old paint over the old gasket and then remove it to see the perfect impression left on the cardboard. Cut around the impression and hey presto a gasket. Use a hole punch to create the holes - job done, costs nothing!

What we learnt this time...

Honda parts are more expensive than Suzuki ones....
