>Project RM125: Painting the Bike

Thankfully Dirt Bikes don't need a lot of painting. We basically had to do the engine, frame, tank and some small bits and pieces - no chrome do dahs like your average road bike.

Where to start
Anybody who knows about painting anything will tell you that success lies in the preparation of the surface. Basically, if you don't start with a surface that is clean, free from flaky bits and grease, you are wasting your time.
Painting the frame
The frame presented it's own problems, although it is steel it needs a decent paint that can take a lot of abuse as you work on other aspects of the bike.

and here's the plan...
1 Get a Bike...
2 Strip It
3 Clean it
4 Paint it
5 Seat
6 Engine
7 Frame and Suspension
8 Test it
9 Race it
The costs so far...
What we learnt this time...

The main thing we learnt was don't buy paint for a £1 from an autojumble. Our lovingly cleaned and prepared shocks looked brilliant for about a week then we noticed that they were cracking (see pic). But the real message is preparation is everything and learn which paints give a good finish on different material... if in doubt, test it.
