The principle of the front suspension is fairly easy to grasp, even if the realisation is a little more tricky. Basically the chrome shaft from the MacPherson strut if the donor vehicle is bolted between the two plates on the chassis (shown left) and the axle of the wheel moves up and down the shaft (which also has a coil over it), damped by a separate shock absorber.

Now this sounds simple, but first you need to assemble a load of bits and pieces, compress the spring, get it all lined up and have faith that the thing will hold together.

Hear are the main components as assembled, now this looks simple, what you can't see are the small spacers, bushes and plates needed to get all this together. We'd go into more detail but we aren't even sure that we have got it right yet.

Somewhere in here is the phosphor bronze bush that allows the hub to slide up and down the chrome shaft. Note the chipped paint on the chassis, that's what happens when you keep taking it off - putting it back on, swearing, taking it off, putting it back on, taking it off, compressing the springs...you get the idea
