The Origin of Extreme Ironing

Legend has it that one day a man living in Leister came home from a long day of work and found a mountain of creased clothes waiting for him. The sight of seeing all those shirts and pillowcases that needed a good press made him sick to his stomach. He thought to himself that he would rather be anywhere else right now, like on top of a mountain or doing bungee jumping, rather than ironing his clothes.

So he did what any sane person would do in that situation. He took his ironing board and a press and with the help of an extension cord set up an ironing station in his garden where he neatly pressed all of the wrinkled shirts and clothes that wanted for him.

Instead of viewing him as insane, his roommate joined in the fun. The next adventure included the two of them together going rock climbing and ironing a bunch of clothes at the same time.

It Started to Spread

Extreme ironing started to spread like wildfire. People from all over the world soon started joining in the fun and everyone wanted to one-up each other. In 1999, worldwide recruitment swept the US, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and parts of South America.

In 2000, extreme ironing reached Europe with the first team coming from Germany. It even led to the creation of Eso Ironing, which is a branch that combines ironing with meditation.

The idea was so unique and the rules were simple. You just needed an ironing board with a hot press, a bunch of wrinkled clothes, and a place where you can iron everything out. But the area has to be as extreme as possible. So people started taking things to the extreme and have gone as up as unreachable mountain peaks to do it and went down the lowest crevices of the earth as well.

So is it a Sport?

In 2002, the first-ever Extreme Ironing Championship was held in Germany. The individual award went to a participant from Germany called Hot Pants while the team award was captured by the British team.

Since then, there have been loads of competitions and people managed to show how creative they can be. They took this brilliant concept and made it into a worldwide phenomenon. There are still discussions about it being a sport still. But there is no doubt that its popularity will only keep rising and will attract many more people with creased shirts that are bored out of their mind when having to press all of their clothes.
