It's a trade-off, and for a working person/parent, it's a useful trade-off. It is not CIPS accredited. It is a REAL university without the building. Beware: Most of the American (USA) and British based online universities are not fully recognized in Canada so it is not recommend investing money in a program that is run by non-Canadian institutes. They charge you for everything. But the workers are great, the pay is great and the benefits, if you can get a permanent job, are awesome. 14 of 24 people found the following review helpful. 2. Those are perhaps private business and not a public funded institution unlike Athabasca. A number of years later, I decided to get a degree in my field, and as I had a career and a life, in-class wasn't going to cut it - even though I had lots of high-quality bricks & mortar schools available to me. 12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. I have been very please with Athabasca University so far. Athabasca University, Canada's Open University, is dedicated to the removal of barriers that restrict access to and success in university-level study and to increasing equality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide. Wrong. - Course material is from the 90s. I now have a n entire armory of knowledge I can draw on for my professional career. They charge like 700 for each course (for student out side Alberta), and they charge for course extension and also for exams. Materials: Teachers: Institution: Support: Value: Use of Technology: Pretty bad experience overall. The program is legitimate and comparable in difficulty to any other. With people taking that exact same course 27/7/365, it's tough to do. Athabasca University is quite safe place for working environment, I am doing independently and in collaboration with my guiding professor. No usage of online learning tools. The university I am very dedicated and disciplined with my studies, I currently work full-time in Information Technology, and having these courses available to work on at anytime is the perfect solution. So, I assume all universities have bad courses here and there. By itself, the course is $400, but they lay on an additional $150 for out of province fees, and another $250 because the course is online. Continually short staffed. The structure they provided allowed me to learn in an environment where my peers wanted to help me succeed. In summary, a great institution and enjoyable experience. Ask me face to face and I will share my experience, living in a small town, in northern AB and somewhat isolated area 90 minutes north of Edmonton.
