With all my jokingly likening this to something along the lines of a "National Lampoon" flick of its '80s era, absurdity is limited, and that makes things all the more unnerving when the film's comedy does go a touch over the top, challenging the buyability of certain set pieces and plot points, while finding color contradicted by some subdued spots in pacing. Planes, Trains And Automobiles Hughes's humorous adventure is a one big gag that thrives upon nothing but the good old brotherhood of the lead cast. And we remember the scene where Del and Neal wake up cuddled together in the cramped motel bed, and Neal asks Del where his hand is, and Del said it's between some pillows, and Neal says, "Those aren't pillows," and the two men bolt out of bed in terror, and Neal shouts, "You see that Bears game last week?" What can be said for him is that he usually produces a real story about people he has clear ideas about; his many teenage comedies, for example, are miles more inventive than the recent sex-and-prom sagas.

There's something kind of repetitious about Hughes' storytelling, and not just the directorial kind, as Hughes's script also gets to be a little driven by filler, to the point of losing focus that it probably can't afford to lose much of when looking at a runtime of merely over an hour-and-a-half. Good family movie!!!! So, this is a classsic in my house to watch during the holidays. Strange, how much poignancy creeps into this comedy, and only becomes stronger while we're laughing. Neil Page (Steve Martin) plays an uptight advertising executive trying to get home to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving. The key early scene takes place in the Wichita motel room they have to share, when Neal explodes, telling Del his jokes stink, his stories are not interesting and he would rather sit through an insurance seminar than listen to any more of the fat man's pointless anecdotes. John Candy is in true form in one of the signature roles of his career; the deeply funny, mostly clueless and thoroughly kind Del Griffith. Storytelling is plenty lively on the whole, but John Hughes' direction is often not especially brisk in its momentum, and when material to the scripting lapses, engagement value goes with it, as Hughes' almost dry storytelling, on its own, has trouble sustaining entertainment value and pacing. 51 of 64 people found this review helpful. He has to walk back through the snow and mud, crossing runways, falling down embankments, until he finally faces a chirpy rental agent (Edie McClurg) who is chatting on the phone about the need for tiny marshmallows in the ambrosia. This, of course, means that through all of the unevenness in believability and pacing, Hughes' script is colorful, with plenty of memorably clever lines, and even more genuinely memorable and endearing set pieces, backed by a colorful drawing of two distinguished leads, who go brought to life by their distinguished portrayers.
